Usually reserved solely for Law Enforcement, Holes is bringing this immersive session on board to kick off the weekend and give us all the opportunity to learn crime scene deduction from one of the world's best investigators.

  • 2:30p-4:00p ‣ [VIP ONLY] Know Thy Enemy: An Introduction to Recognition of a Serial Predator

THIS SESSION IS FOR VIP BADGE HOLDERS ONLY.

    ✶ Location: Studio B

    ✶ Speaker: Paul Holes

Law enforcement often fails to recognize the clues that a fantasy-motivated offender leaves behind at the crime scene. This costs valuable time in recognizing that a serial offender is involved, which ultimately makes an investigation far more difficult.  Understanding how an offender's psychology leads to their behaviors during the commission of a serial crime, which ultimately leads to where investigators should look for evidence, is critical. Paul Holes has a mantra: "Know thy enemy" -- and this presentation provides the fundamentals that will help us all with that understanding. Holes will use this VIP-only session to present select lessons from his actual coursework that he's provided to sexual assault and homicide investigators over the years.

  • 4:00p-5:00p ‣ Can You Beat the Box? Lie Detection 101 with Lisa Ribacoff

    ✶ Location: Theater

    ✶ Speaker: Lisa Ribacoff

Join renwoned polygraph examiner Lisa Ribacoff for a crash course and interactive experience focused on the myths and realities of the lie detector. What actually happens when someone is in the hot seat? Does being willing to take a polygraph exam imply that person is innocent or being truthful? Can they actually be used in a court of law? You'll never watch a true crime doc or cable news mystery the same way again.

    ✶ Speaker: Patty Tackett

Retired Cold Case Detective Patty Tackett takes us inside the investigation of a cold case from the starting line to successful prosecution. ✶ Location: Theater

    ✶ Speaker: Paul Holes

Phil Hughes was convicted in 1980 of killing three women in Contra Costa in the late 1960’s/early 70’s. But after Hughes’ arrest, other unsolved murders in the region were still left open. Just how many of them was Hughes responsible for? And were there other serial killers at work during that time? The families deserve answers and, if Hughes was responsible, he deserves to never see another parole hearing. Get ready to go down the cold-case rabbit hole with Paul Holes!

THIS SESSION IS FOR VIP BADGE HOLDERS ONLY.

    ✶ Location: Star Lounge

    ✶ Speaker: Lisa Ribacoff

Investigators and law enforcement officers conduct interviews of witnesses and suspects on almost every case they are involved with.  But how do they know when the conversation should be an "interview" or when it should be an "interrogation"?  Using real world cases and visual examples and exercises Lisa will explain a variety of key techniques that are used on the other side of the double sided mirror and how they apply to hot and cold cases alike. Next time you watch a true crime doc that features a "person of interest" with police, you'll know quickly whether they are being interviewed...or interrogated.
